Frederick Bourne Taylor and Thomas Norton Hart served as Alderman of Boston in 1882 (Hart served in 1879-1882). Hart, Taylor & Company was started in 1861 with Thomas Norton Hart. They were dealers in hats, caps, and furs. The business grew in large proportions and was eminently successful. In the course of time, the firm became the largest in this line of business in New England. In 1878 Hart retired from the merchantile business with a substantial fortune. In 1880 Hart was elected president of Mount Vernon National Bank of Boston and eventually became mayor of Boston in 1888. -- Genealogical and Personal Memoirs relating to the families of the state of Massachusetts, Vol III by Cutter and Adams. page 1720-21.
10 Aug 1825 Abigail Elizabeth Snow born in Bowdoinham, Sagadahoc, Maine. She was the 6th of 8 children. Her parents were John Snow (age 48) and Elizabeth Ridley (age 41). Maine Death Records indicate that she died age 52, 10 months and 17 days. If she died on 27 June 1878 and this information is correct, her birth date would have been 10 August 1825. Some sources say she was born in 1826 or 1829.

17 Sep 1836 Parents George Stonehouse Taylor and Anne Bourne listed on Hannibal passenger list: George Tylor age 26; occupation listed as tailor; accompanied by wife Ann Tylor (age 26) and Fanny Tylor (age6). No mention of Frederick but he may have arrived at sametime.
4 Feb 1850 Federal Census lists Frederick Bourne Taylor, age 19, living with parents George Stonehouse Taylor (age 40) and Anne Bourne (age 38) in Boston Ward 4, Suffolk, Massachusetts
1860 Federal Census lists Frederick Bourne Taylor as age 29, living with parents George Stonehouse Taylor, 50, and Anne Bourne 48, in Boston Ward 11, Suffolk, Massachusetts; parents’ home valued at $2,200 + personal $500. 1860 Federal Census lists Abigail Snow (age 31) as residing in the household of Thomas Norton Hart (age 31) and Elizabeth Snow Hart (age 35, her sister). Boston Ward 5, Suffolk County.
8 March 1861 Abigail Snow’s father, John Snow, age 79, died at Bowdoin, Sagadahoc, Maine.
15 Aug 1861 Frederick B Taylor and Abigail Elizabeth Snow of Bowdoinham, Sagadahoc, Maine married; she was the daughter of John Snow and Elizabeth Ridley. Abigail was 6th of 8 children. The wedding was listed in Boston, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He was age 30, a trader; she was ___. [Ellsworth Herald: Gardiner, 15th inst., Frederick B. TAYLOR, Esq. to Miss Abigail E. 1861 Frederick Bourne Taylor and Thomas Norton Hart (later Alderman and Mayor of Boston) started Hart, Taylor & Company, dealers in hats, caps, and furs. Partner Hart retired from the business in 1878

8 Mar 1880 Boston Post: “An adjourned meeting of the Brookline Land Company was held at the office of the company in the Equitable building, on Saturday, President Hart in the chair. The resignation of Mr. William H. Hill, one of the two trustees, was received, and Mr. Thomas N. Hart was selected to fill the vacancy. The following were elected directors by a unanimous vote: John W. Chandler, Frederick B. Taylor, and William H. Hill, Jr.”
1881 Boston Blue Book of 1881 lists a George S. Taylor living at 176 Springfield St. Boston and a Frederick B. Taylor at 564 Shawmut Ave.— Ellsworth Herald: Gardiner, 15th inst., Frederick B. TAYLOR, Esq. to Miss Abigail E. SNOW, both of Boston.
1882 Served as Alderman of Boston (all the while living at same residence as Thomas Norton Hart; Frederick and daughter Mabel remained at this address until his death in 1891 at which time she married Walter L Fisher one month after her father’s death

21 Mar 1891 Boston Post: “OBITUARY: FREDERICK B. TAYLOR-After an illness of only a week Mr. Frederick B. Taylor, formerly of the firm of Hart, Taylor & Co., died yesterday morning at the residence of his brother-in-law, the Hon. Thomas N. Hart, 298 Commonwealth avenue. He was born Jan. 30, 1832, in Harbings, Eng., and came to this country very young, his parents residing in New York first, and afterwards in Boston. Mr. Taylor entered business, and formed in 1860, together with Thomas N. Hart and the late Orin B. North, the firm of Hart, Taylor & Co., which was highly successful. The house dealt in hats, caps and furs, and became the largest of its kind in New England and one of the largest in the country. The firm occupied a building of its own in Chauncey street, and was succeeded by Dyer, Taylor & Co., now Dyer, Rice & Co. The firm Hart, Taylor & Co. retired from active business in 1878, but was not formally dissolved until 1885. Mr. Taylor had acted as trustee and director in several financial institutions and railroads, and in 1882 was a memberof the Common Council for Ward 18. He was an active member of the Art Club. Mr. Taylor leaves a only daughter, four brothers who hold prominent places in business, and two sisters. Ever since the death of his wife he lived in the family of Mr. Hart, his brother-in-law and former partner in business, they having been closely associated for more than forty years. Mr. Taylor was greatly respected for his integrity. The funeral will take place at 298 Commonwealth avenue at 3pm. tomorrow.”
21 Mar 1891 Boston Post: “DEATHS - TAYLOR—In this city, March 20, Frederick B. Taylor, aged 59 years.”
23 Mar 1891 Boston Post: “Mr. Taylor’s Funeral - Simple Service at the Residence of His Brother-in-Law, ex-Mayor Hart. The funeral of the late Frederick B. Taylor, of the well-known firm of Hart, Taylor & Co., took place from the residence of ex-Mayor Hart, his brother-in-law, yesterday afternoon. The services were brief and very simple. The Rev. Minot J. Savage, in officiating, read several scriptural selections and offered a short prayer. Among those present at the obsequies were Collector A.W. Beard, Spencer W. Richardson of Richardson & Hill, Colonel Jonas H. French, ex-Representative Sanger, Charles E. Powers, ex-president of the Middlesex railroad, Thomas Dana, Robert Ferguson of Shepard, Norwell & Co., Martin Van Nason, Warren C. Hobbs, Henry Jackson of Jackson, Mandell & Daniells, Joseph Grar, Isaac Fenno, William Atherton, Augustus Russ, Andreas Blume, J. Hopewell, jr., Alderman Weston Lewis, ex-Alderman Sidney Cushing, Thomas Mack, Gorham Rogers, A.A. Barrage, Charles W. Parker of Macular, Parker & Co., John W. Leighton, Oscar H. Sampson and Charles B. Perkins. The services were under the direction of Mr. Wallace F. Robinson. The interment took place at the Forest Hills Cemetery.”
30 Mar 1891 Frederick Bourne Taylor died in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, age 59. Residence listed as 298 Commonwealth Avenue Place of interment was Section 31 Lot 3231, Blue Hill Ave, Forrest Hills Cemetery
18 Nov 1905 Boston Daily Globe: “SOUTH END SALES - The sale has gone to record of the estate 465 Massachusetts av, between Tremont st and Columbus av, South End, taxed for $9700. The property comprises a four-story brick house and 1980 square feet of land, the latter taxed for $5900. The grantor is the Fredeick B.Taylor estate and the buyer Arthur W. Cole.”
18 Aug 1953 Daughter Mabel Taylor died at age 85 in Winnetka, Cook, Illinois.

298 Commonwealth is located on the south side of Commonwealth, between Gloucester and Hereford, with 296 Commonwealth to the east and 300 Commonwealth to the west.
298 Commonwealth was designed by architect Samuel D. Kelley and built ca. 1880 by building contractor John W. Shapleigh, probably for speculative sale, one of three contiguous houses (294-296-298 Commonwealth). By 1882, 298 Commonwealth was the home of Thomas Norton Hart and his wife, Elizabeth (Snow) Hart, and their daughter, Abbie Snow Hart. Elizabeth S. Hart is shown as the owner on the 1883, 1888, and 1898 Bromley maps. They had lived at 85 Newland Street in 1880. Thomas Hart had been a hat and cap manufacturer until 1878, when he retired from the business. He also was president of the Mount Vernon National Bank. He served as Mayor of Boston twice, once in 1889-1890, and again in 1900-1901. Living with the Harts were Thomas Hart’s brother-in-law and former business partner, Frederick B. Taylor, and his daughter, Mabel Taylor. Frederick Taylor’s wife, Abigail (Snow) Taylor, had died in June of 1878. Frederick and Mabel Taylor had lived with the Harts at 85 Newland in 1880.
In June of 1885, Abbie Hart married to Carl William Ernst. After their marriage, they lived with her parents at 298 Commonwealth. Carl Ernst was a journalist, author, and historian, and served as Thomas Hart’s private secretary for many years. Frederick Taylor died in March of 1891, and Mabel Taylor married in April of 1891 to Walter L. Fisher, a lawyer from Chicago.
Elizabeth Hart died in November of 1906. Thomas Hart and the Ernsts continued to live at 298 Commonwealth. They also maintained a home in Swampscott. The Heirs of Elizabeth S. Hart are shown as the owners on the 1908 and 1912 Bromley maps, Thomas N. Hart et al are shown as the owners on the 1917 map, and Thomas Hart is shown as the owner on the 1928 map.
Carl Ernst died in April of 1919. Thomas Hart and Abbie Ernst continued to live at 298 Commonwealth. Abbie Ernst died in March of 1924, and Thomas Hart died in October of 1927.
In May of 1928, the Estate of Thomas Hart filed on behalf a prospective purchaser for permission convert the property from a single-family dwelling into dental offices. The application subsequently was abandoned. The house was not listed in the 1929-1930 Blue Books. By 1929, 298 Commonwealth was the home of Joseph L. MacCalduff and his wife, Mary (McQuaid) MacCalduff, and their son-in-law and daughter, Francis J. O’Hara, Jr., and Dorothy (MacCalduff) O’Hara. Joseph MacCalduff was a barber at the Hotel Touraine (southeast corner of Boylston and Tremont). Francis O’Hara, Jr., was a wholesale fish dealer. In September of 1929, Joseph MacCalduff applied for (and subsequently received) permission to install a fire escape, indicating that the property would be used as a lodging house. Dorothy M. O’Hara is shown as the owner on the 1938 Bromley map. The MacCalduffs and the O’Haras continued to live at 298 Commonwealth until about 1941. By that time, Joseph MacCalduff was a liquor dealer. Francis O’Hara continued to be a wholesale fish merchant. 298 Commonwealth was shown as vacant in the 1942 City Directory. The property changed hands, remaining a lodging house until about 1961. In about 1962, 298 Commonwealth was acquired by Chamberlayne School and Chamberlayne Junior College, which used it as a dormitory. In the mid-1970s, Chamberlayne went bankrupt and in June of 1975, 298 Commonwealth was transferred to Bernard P. Rome, trustee in Bankruptcy. In December of 1976, 298 Commonwealth was purchased by Back Bay Restorations Company, headed by Zena Nemetz of Newton. At the same time, Back Bay Restorations also purchased a number of Chamberlayne’s other properties (including 148 Commonwealth, 278-280-282 Commonwealth, 199 Marlborough, and 238 Marlborough. In October of 1976, Back Bay Restorations applied for (and subsequently received) permission to convert the property from a dormitory and lodging house into nine apartments. In March of 1978, it amended the application to reduce the number of apartments from nine to seven. In September of 1984, Back Bay Restorations converted 298 Commonwealth into seven condominiums.
